AI in the classroom

At the ACT conference on June 26, the focus was on the pros and cons of using AI in the classroom

Generative AI (GENAI) is being used in 'low risk' ways such as creating content for lessons and for admin support such as writing letters and emails to parents.

Definitions

Generative AI refers to technology that can be used to create new content based on large volumes of data that models have been trained on from a variety of works and other sources.

ChatGPT and Google Bard are generative AI tools built on large language models (LLMs).

These toools can: answer questions; complete written tasks; respond to prompts in a human like way.

An example of the use of ChatGPT was its response to the prompt 'create words under human rights, cultures and identities in the UK' Thus

Human rights: Basic rights and freedoms that belong to every person in the world from birth until death.'

The benefits of AI in education include

  • Personalised learning for each student
  • Increase motivation, engagement and learning outcomes
  • Greater time release for 1:1 teacher/ student interaction
  • Reduced teacher workload, improved teacher work life balance
  • Learning can target specific knowledge gaps
  • improved learning support for SEND
