On 29 April 2008, a Stabilisation and Association Agreement with Serbia was signed, setting out priorities for the country's membership application. On 22 December 2009 Serbia formally applied for EU membership.
In 2010, the process to ratify the Stabilisation and Association Agreement began, and on 1st March 2012 Serbia was granted EU candidate status. Official negotiations were opened on 21 January 2014.
Montenegro is now a separate state
