Summary: The EU has approved a single licence that would be valid in all member states beginning in 2013.
In December 2006 the European Parliament announced plans to introduce a new forgery-proof, credit card-style licence with a photograph and possibly a microchip that would be valid in all member states, replacing over 100 different paper and plastic licences.
The new licences will be phased in from 2013 to 2032.
Member states will have the choice of issuing licences for 10 or 15 years. Licences for truck and bus drivers will be valid for only five years.
Member states will have the option of including a microchip to store information about the driver.
A database will be set up that will track drivers’ history across Europe.
At present drivers with a bad record can sometimes get a new licence in a different country.
