EU laws on package travel

Summary: The EU requires suppliers of package holidays to provide full information on what is offered and to be contractually bound by the information provided.

The Council Directive relating to package travel, package holidays and package tours is 90/314/EEC of June 13, 1990.

A package is defined as a product that covers a period of more than 24 hours and is sold at an inclusive price.

The brochure provided to the consumer must provide a minimum amount of information such as price, destination and itinerary, accommodation, meal plan, passport and visa requirements, deadline for notifying consumer of cancellation.

The prices stipulated in the contract may not be changed unless the contract expressly provides for the possibility.

The consumer is entitled to be compensated for non performance of the contract except where the consumer is at fault or for reasons of force majeure.
