Population: 2.97 million (estimate at July 2008)
In 2100 BC a greater Armenian state extended from the Mediterranean Sea to the Caspian. Over the first millennium AD, Armenians lived mainly in two distinct areas, where they live now and in what is now the eastern Anatolia area of Turkey.
An independent Armenian state existed from 1918 to 1921 but was swallowed up by the Soviet Union in 1921, later becoming a full republic until independence in 1991. Russia and Armenia still have a close strategic relationship.
There will be more information about Armenia later.
