Ethnic groups – Ukrainian 77.8%, Russian 17.3%, other 4.9% (2001 census).

Languages – the issue of language in Ukraine is sensitive. Ukrainian is the official language, Russian is widely spoken.  Research in March 2010 showed that 65% considered Ukrainian as their native language and 33% Russian.  In May 2012 a similar poll showed that 50% of respondents considered Ukrainian their native language, 29% Russian, while 20% considered both Ukrainian and Russian to be their mother tongue. Just 1% gave a different native language, mostly in named villages or communities on the borders (Hungarian, Moldovan, Crimean Tatar).


Religion – Orthodox 83.7% (Kyiv Patriarchate 50.4%, Moscow Patriarchate 26.1%, Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox 7.2%), Ukrainian Greek Catholic 8%, Roman Catholic 2.2%, Protestant 2.2%, Jewish 0.6%, other 3.2% (2006 estimate)
