Current Government: Head of State – President Tomislav Nikolić (since 31 May 2012, heading a coalition of some 12 parties).
The president is elected by direct vote for a five-year term (eligible for a second term); the prime minister is elected by the National Assembly.
Prime Minister Aleksandar Vučić, leader of the Serbian Progressive Party, appointed by the President on 27 April 2014. He was previously Minister of Defence (2012 to 2013).
Constitution:  Parliamentary democracy. Many previous constitutions; the latest came into force in November 2006.
Single chamber National Assembly (250 seats; deputies elected according to party lists to serve four-year terms).
Member of OSCE.  EU candidate country.
Stabilisation and Association Agreement with EU in May 2008; full implementation of the Interim Trade Agreement with the EU in February 2010; gained candidate status in March 2012. Formal negotiations began January 2014.
