Bordering countries are Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania.

Serbia is landlocked.

Largest cities – Belgrade (capital, population 1.17 million), Novi Sad (231.8 thousand)

 

Main river is the Danube, forming part of the state border, and an historic international highway. The river Sava joins the Danube at Belgrade. The other significant river is the Drina, forming most of the border with Bosnia..

Terrain
: very varied, with rich fertile plains in the north; limestone ranges and basins to the east; ancient mountains and hills to the south-east.


Mountains: the highest point is Midžor (2,169 m), in the Balkan mountain range forming the border with Bulgaria.
