Spain - geography

Geography - Area of 504,030 square km. Bordering countries are Portugal, France, Andorra, Gibraltar. The 14 km Strait of Gibraltar separates Spain from Morocco (where two autonomous Spanish cities Ceuta and Melilla are located). Spanish territory includes the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands in the Atlantic and the two autonomous cities and several Spanish sovereign islands along the north African coast.

Capital - Madrid (population 3.2 million (January 2008)
Largest cities – Barcelona (1.6 million), Valencia, Sevilla, Zaragoza, Málaga, Murcia.

Rivers: Tagus, Ebro, Duero, Guadalquivir
Terrain: much of the centre is high plateau surrounded by hills. Separated from France by the Pyrenees.  Sierra Nevada mountains in the south-east.
The Sierra Nevada range has the highest point in European Spain,  Mulhacén - 3,478 m.
