Geography

Area of  20,273 sq km.

Bordering countries are Italy to the west, Croatia to the south and east, Hungary to the north-east and Austria to the north. Slovenia has a small coastline on the Adriatic Sea (some 47 km).

Largest cities – Ljubljana (capital - population 269 thousand), Maribor (97 thousand), Celje, Kranj, Velenje.

Main rivers - the Sava rises in the Julian Alps and passes through Ljubljana, flowing on into Croatia; the Drava and the Mura (Mur) rivers flow from Austria and also cross into Croatia, where they eventually merge.  The Mura forms part of the border with Hungary.

Terrain: Alpine region borders Austria and Italy. 40% of the country is elevated ground. The highest point is Mount Triglav at 2,864 metres. Half of the country is covered by forest - the third most forested country in the EU after Sweden and Finland.
