Constitution
: parliamentary democracy.
Bicameral parliament, consisting of the Camera dei Deputati (Chamber of Deputies) with 630 members and the Senato della Repubblica (Senate of the Republic) with 315 elected members and a few life members. Election by a form of proportional representation.
A geographically unified Kingdom of Italy was proclaimed in 1861, but the country was not finally unified until 1870.   Italy became a Republic in 1946 after the 2nd World War.
Italy was one of the 6 founder members of European Coal and Steel Community in 1951, which became in 1957 the European Economic Community, and in 1992 the European Union.
