Language – German is the official language. Low German is spoken in the northern part of Germany and High German in the lower half of Germany, in Austria and Switzerland. The German language has many dialects including Bavarian, Swabian, Hessian, Plattdeutsch, and Saxon.
Lower Sorbian, Upper Sorbian and Romani are recognised as regional languages. Some Danish is spoken in Schleswig-Holstein.
