Flag: 3 equal horizontal bands of black (top), red and gold. These are symbolic colours through German history going back to the mediæval banner of the Holy Roman Empire – a black eagle with red beak and claws on a gold field, now in the coat of arms.
National holiday: Unity Day (Tag der Deutschen Einheit) 3rd October – commemorating German reunification in 1990.
Current Government: Head of State: President Frank-Walter Steinmeier (since March, 2017).  The presidency is a ceremonial role, elected for a five year term by a Federal Convention.
Head of Government: Chancellor Olaf Scholz (since December 8, 2021 ). Next Bundestag elections February 2025

*  Federal Assembly (Bundestag) – 736 seats, members elected by popular vote for 4 years by a system of personalised proportional representation.
