Current Government: Head of State – President Sauli Niinisto (from March 2012) by direct election for a six-year term. Re-elected January 2018.
President of the Government (Prime Minister): Sanna Marin who succeeded Antti Rinne when he resigned in December 2019 after losing the confidence of a coalition partner. Sanna Marin aged 34 is reportedly the youngest serving PM in the world.

Constitution:  Finland is representative democracy with a semi-presidential parliamentary system. The President is head of state and in co-operation with the cabinet takes charge of foreign policy.
There is a 200 member single chamber Parliament of Finland, Eduskunta. Members are elected to multi-seat constituencies on four-year terms by proportional representation.

Finland joined the United Nations in 1955, and the OECD in 1969.
Joined the EU in January 1995.
