Plitvička jezera (The Plitvice Lakes) Sixteen lakes spill from one to the next over a distance of some eight km, from an altitude of 636 m to 503 m. The waters show distinctive colours, ranging from azure to green, grey or blue, changing constantly depending on the quantity of minerals or organisms in the water and the angle of the sunlight. In March 1991 the Plitvice Lakes became the scene of the first armed conflict of the Croatian War of Independence.
