Viking exploration
Viking ships were designed for speed, strength and navigation in shallow waters. Evidence of exploration across the North Atlantic Ocean shows that they could also survive rough seas. They sailed far from Scandinavian waters, north and west to Iceland, Greenland and Vinland (Newfoundland), south to the Mediterranean. Although usually pictured as carrying pirate raiders, most Viking ships were merchant vessels.
