Schloß Schönbrunn Empress Maria Theresa (18th century) commissioned her architect to reshape an older palace and garden in Rococo style, and decided to make it her imperial summer residence. It remained so until the 20th century. Imperial rule ended in 1918. After World War Two Schönbrunn Palace was requisitioned as offices for the British Delegation to the Allied Commission for Austria and as the Headquarters of the small British Military Garrison in Vienna. In 1961 it was used for the meeting between US President John F Kennedy and Russian leader Nikita Khrushchev. Schönbrunn Palace was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1996.
