EU laws on the movement of pets
Summary: The EU has laid down animal health requirements for the movement of pets which has led to the creation of pet passports.
Regulation 998/2003 lays down the animal health requirements for the movement of pets both between member states and from third countries.
Pet owners travelling within the EU should contact their vet to get the necessary documents. Cats and dogs must have a valid rabies vaccination. For entry into the UK, Ireland and Malta, treatment for ticks and tapeworm is required.
