Geography

Area of 83,872 sq km.
Austria, landlocked in central Europe, is bounded by eight countries. Its position is at the crossroads of central Europe easily accessible through several Alpine passes and valleys.

Bordering countries are Germany and the Czech Republic to the north, Slovakia and Hungary to the east and Slovenia and Italy to the south, Switzerland and the small principality of Liechtenstein to the west.

Largest cities – Wien (Vienna, the capital, population 1.72 million - 2011 data), Graz (253,994), Linz, Salzburg, Innsbruck

Main river is the Danube

Terrain: mountainous, with less than a third of the country lying below 500 metres. The highest mountain peak is Großglockner 3798 m, the second highest point in the Alps.
